Key Ingredients
Key Ingredients
Shea Butter from the African Shea tree is a wonderful skincare ingredient, it is rich in vitamins, plant sterols, minerals and other nourishing compounds for the skin. The butter softens, protects against drying, and nourishes sensitive, dry and inflamed skin.
Extra Virgin Olive oil has been linked to soap making for centuries, with castile soaps being entirely composed of olive oil. Olive oil is unusual as it is produced by pressing the fruit rather than the seed of the olive. In skincare, olive oil is a major source of squalene, a common lipid produced by skin cells. Squalene lubricates the skin preventing the evaporation of moisture from the skin tissues (a process called trans epidermal water loss).
Cocoa butter from the African Cocoa tree is pressed from the cocoa bean in the manufacture of cocoa and chocolate products. Unrefined cocoa butter retains a lot of the chocolate scent. Cocoa butter is widely used in skincare products as it imparts luxurious feeling protection to skin, becoming a barrier to trans epidermal water loss.

What is soap made from?
Traditional cold process soap is made from a mixture of fatty acids - in our case plant oils and butters - mixed with an alkaline solution. In a bar of solid soap, the alkali used is sodium hydroxide, which turns the fatty acids into sodium salts, or soap!
You can tell what the starting oils are in a soap by their Latin name. For example Sodium Olivate is the soap that is formed from Olive Oil, Sodium Sheabutterate is from Shea Butter and so on.
What's the problem with fragrances?
At Boo, we only use essential oils; 100% natural fragrances extracted from plants... but they may not be suitable for everyone.
If you have a sensitivity to fragrance allergens, you might want to avoid all fragrances, including the natural ones.
Selecting our fragrance-free products is perfect for those with extra sensitivities including individuals undergoing radiotherapy.
Top tips to getting the best out of a bar of soap
1. Make sure your soap sits on a freely draining soap dish
2. Give the bar time to dry between uses (we know this can be difficult in busy households... keep reading)
3. Chop a big bar into a couple of pieces so if one gets soggy you can swap to another piece for a bit.
4. Try to keep the bar standing upright on the dish to let the air get round it.
5. Keep a second soap on the sink so you can alternate which one is in use.
